The third residency at SCCP from January - April - a stay that was prolonged due to COVID restrictions. Japan would not open its border fully for another 3 years.
2022
My first residency at Michio Sugiyama’s SSS Gallery. Sugiyama san founded SCCP in the early 1990’s. The Japanese government allowed me a special 6 week visa whilst Japan’s border was closed.
2023
My second residency at SSS Gallery leading to the galleries first solo exhibition for an international artist. “Inhume” brought together works created in response to historical and contemporary themes of burial, juxtaposing the ancient practice of burial mounds from England and Europe with contemporary burial of nuclear waste.
2024
During the summer of 2024 I held a solo exhibition at Tenmakan Museum in Shiga Prefecture on the ancient Tokkaido Road located on the ancient pilgrim route from Tokyo to Kyoto. “North Country Angel” utilised soil from my Japanese in-laws rice farm to make small ‘votive’ sculptures placed around the museum precinct. Two months after the death of my mother this exhibition was a highly personal moment to consider the transience of life. Afterwards, these ephemeral works were documented and returned to the soil. One piece was requested by the museum for their permanent collection
2025 / 2026
I undertook my fourth residency at SCCP from Jan-Feb 2026. This period helped consolidate a range of field research and travel from New Mexico, Europe and Japan where designs for a series of vertical tables took shape. This culminated in the solo exhibition “For What We Are About To…” where local soils, unfired clays and wood were located from my family to form free standing pieces, later dismantled and retruned.
