'Behind General Groves's Golden Teeth'

This work has been created for the group show of RWA Academicians all working in various forms of fired clay. Curated by Sculptor Pat Volk the exhibition ‘Dreaming in Fire’ includes work by Jon Buck, Peter Randall Page, Dorcas Casey, Hamish Young and Pat Volk.

‘Behind General Groves's Golden Teeth’ 2024 (200 x 200 x 15 cm ceramic wall hanging) is inspired by the experience of visiting the site of the atomic bomb development in 1945 at Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Groves’s had special tooth guards made to protect him from the radiation of the first atomic bomb test in New Mexico, bombs that would later be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

INHUME

Amanda Chambers Solo Exhibition at Shigaraki Share Studio Gallery, Shigaraki, Japan.

The works were produced in a two week period as part of a residency at Shigaraki Share Studio.

Each piece considered aspects of burial in response to the growing issues surrounding the future signposting and management of toxic nuclear waste.

Inspiration was derived from 12 months living close to a nuclear power station in the U.K. (Sizewell). This concept was contextualised by examining the history of ritual burials and later enhanced by the exploration of native flora of Japan such as bamboo and rice straw. The central eponymous work, originally a three dimensional sculpture, was melted down in the largest gas kiln at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. The ceramic and wire remains were then reconstructed to resemble the Saxon ship burials found in Suffolk, England.

Inhume is the first solo exhibition by an international artist at SSS Gallery owned by Director Michio Sugiyama, one of the co-founders of Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park.
